The first step in providing data security and privacy on a metaverse is building privacy-preserving technologies from scratch. Privacy in the metaverse needs to be heavily considered and protected, by users as well as companies, who need to begin to incorporate privacy by design as they design technologies that we are so dependent upon. All of these things combined will go a long way to creating a metaverse that is secure, privacy-sensitive, and user-regulated. The technologies used within a metaverse will extend current, extensive data collection and usage.

Article 37 GDPR states: “The appointment of the Data Protection Officer is based on professional competence, in particular a thorough knowledge of data protection law and practice, and the ability to carry out the task.” Many experts agree that the DPO should be a licensed attorney, not only sufficient knowledge of GDPR, but also of other privacy laws that are important to employers.
